SITES: Early Planning for Maintenance and Performance Furthers Sustainability Goals and Marketability - 1.0 PDH (LA CES/HSW)

Oct 22, 2016 12:00am ‐ Oct 22, 2016 12:00am

Credits: None available.

Increased municipal requirements and decreased maintenance budgets are challenges that affect public and private projects. This session examines how early integration of sustainable design decisions for hydrology, soil, and vegetation with operations and maintenance plans can improve performance outcomes, cost effectiveness, educational opportunities, and marketability while satisfying SITES credits.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to integrate decision choices early in the design process for water, soils, and vegetation with operations and maintenance plans to improve performance outcomes.
  • Identify lessons learned from SITES project examples and other relevant projects that demonstrate sustainable practices with performance monitoring.
  • Analyze data from performance monitoring and show how it can translate to cost effectiveness. Demonstrate how developing successful metrics early can serve as an economic tool and improve individual marketability.
  • Develop ideas for educational elements, programming, and partnerships that extend and enhance sustainability awareness and learning.

Building resilient cities and communities requires the evaluation of multiple future scenarios. Community-endorsed decision support tools are needed to better understand and communicate climate vulnerabilities and opportunities. This session presents three-data driven tools from the U.S and the Netherlands optimized for visualizing and prioritizing multi-benefit green infrastructure investment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the opportunities for using data to prioritize high-impact green infrastructure projects.
  • Gain insight into innovative climate adaption modeling in the U.S and the Netherlands.
  • Learn to assess proposed design and planning interventions for urban landscapes and whole communities.
  • Explore emerging strategies for using data to purse climate justice and serve vulnerable urban populations.

Constraint or Opportunity: Designing Accessible Landscape Architecture – 1.0 (LA CES/HSW)

Oct 21, 2016 12:00am ‐ Oct 21, 2016 12:00am

Credits: None available.

Are accessibility requirements a burden to the quality of a project’s design, or can they enhance both universal usability and design integrity? A panel composed of a landscape architect, a state agency representative, and an accessibility representative focuses on case studies of highly designed responses to specific accessibility regulations.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the basic principles of accessible design as applied in urban landscape architecture.
  • Learn specific design choices relative to accessibility and Universal Design for "special" populations, and how they can be of benefit in all design contexts.
  • Clarify black, white, and "grey" areas of understanding regarding federal and state accessibility regulations and guidelines.
  • Investigate imaginative design responses to landscape-related accessibility regulations and guidelines through case study examples of built work.
