Description

The U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, located on the historic St. Elizabeth’s Campus in Washington, D.C., was the largest federal construction project since the Pentagon. This session will demonstrate the approach to sustainable design and management of this high-performance, green infrastructure project, including 12.5 acres of green roofs, while maintaining historic preservation goals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the opportunities and challenges of designing and managing high-performance, green infrastructure systems.
  • Understand how to work with a multi-disciplinary team to achieve rigorous landscape performance benchmarks, particularly within the GSA's Design Excellence program.
  • Examine green roof strategies to achieve habitat restoration, historic preservation, well-being, and economic sustainability.
  • Learn how to balance protection of cultural and natural resources with a client's program on a large campus through planning, construction and landscape management.
