Dense urban communities lack options to expand open space while surplus public properties, such as alleys and medians sit idle and underused. In an era of dwindling budgets and aging infrastructure, urban design must be flexible and innovative and maximize in-between spaces. This presentation will highlight ways to transform underused public spaces by layering innovative design with dynamic, social places for people.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about efforts in major cities around the country to create new open space.
  • Learn how non-profits, public agencies and design professionals can partner to develop new public spaces.
  • Explore ways to develop simple, affordable projects for small public spaces.
