Description

The Boston Schoolyard Initiative has spent nearly two decades transforming the city’s schoolyards from cracked asphalt lots into dynamic centers for learning, recreation, and community life. Through a participatory planning process that includes professional landscape architects, this unique public-private partnership has pioneered new concepts in educational schoolyard design and created vast infrastructure for student health and wellness. This presentation will explore design principles used to create rich, vibrant green spaces for experiential learning on school grounds - even in dense urban areas.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the Boston Schoolyard Initiative’s multi-stakeholder approach to schoolyard design.
  • Examine the impact of well-designed schoolyards on students’ physical and mental health and academic performance.
  • Understand how maintenance considerations influence schoolyard design.
