Responding to aging infrastructure, the NYC Council and Van Alen Institute launched an international design competition that aims to spark a new public conversation about the much-loved Brooklyn Bridge. The competition's finalists will be joined by representatives from the City and the Institution to share their perspectives on how this unprecedented process has inspired real progress.

Learning objectives:

  • Boldness in Process: What we can learn from this collaborative process in redesigning future infrastructure and public realms. How can we make processes like this more adaptable and malleable.
  • Boldness in Strategy: The benefit of having a professional and young adult group competing side by side and how this strategy has positively inspired and influenced young designers.
  • Boldness in Culture: Inclusivity and diversity yield better designs. How can we facilitate better communication and collaborative processes so more voices can be reflected in future design outcomes.
  • Boldness in Action: Creative solutions in transforming aged infrastructure and public engagement strategies that we can experiment with quickly for feedback during and after the pandemic.
