Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s flagship park, welcoming more than 10 million visitors each year. Explore recent renovation projects sensitive to the original Olmsted & Vaux plan that meet the needs of the communities that use and border the park today—particularly communities of color, young people, low-income families, and new immigrants.
Learning objectives:
- Explore how the Reimagine Prospect Park team deployed a variety of interactive, qualitative and quantitative engagement tools designed to provide users with the inspiration and information needed to give meaningful input about the future of the Rose Garden site.
- Identify the guiding principles that were developed by community members and the Alliance to ensure that future development and improvement efforts are founded in key community priorities, as well as site and feasibility factors.
- Learn how the design team is working on blending contemporary design into the historic layers of Prospect Park.
- Learn about how the Alliance worked to Re:New Prospect Park given the impacts of COVID and highlight the importance of community-centered and focused investment during challenging times.
Christian Zimmerman, FASLA
VP of Capital & Landscape Management
Prospect Park Alliance
As Vice President, Christian oversees day-to-day operations for all capital work and landscape management, leading a team of architects, landscape architects, horticulturists, arborists, and environmentalists who work with the City, community organizations, and user groups to balance the needs and demands of historic preservation, natural resources, and park maintenance.
His unique knowledge and skills have re-created the timeless original Olmsted design and embraced creative new uses and modern innovation. In his 31 years of shaping the Park, he has drawn on the talents of a wide range of collaborators and Alliance staff to bring the best to the Park revitalization.
Nisha Baliga, AICP
Co-Executive Director
Hester Street
Nisha Baliga AICP (she/hers) is the Co-Executive Director of Hester Street. Since joining in 2015, she played a critical role in leading the organizations’ rapid growth and impact through projects in NYC and across the country. She has led multiple large-scale projects at the intersection of equity and climate adaptation, resiliency and arts and culture , including CreateNYC: A Cultural Plan for all New Yorkers, Cities RISE and Take Care 2020. Nisha holds a master’s degree in Urban Planning from Columbia University, was a 2018 Next City Vanguard and a 2019 Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP) Impact alumni.
Sue Donoghue
President and Park Administrator
Prospect Park Alliance
Susan M. Donoghue is President of Prospect Park Alliance, the non-profit organization that operates the park in partnership with the City of New York, and Prospect Park Administrator. In this dual appointment by Prospect Park Alliance and NYC Parks, Sue is responsible for setting the vision and overall strategy for Prospect Park, Brooklyn's flagship, 585-acre park.
As President of the Alliance, Sue oversees fundraising and revenue-generating activities that provide $12 million in general operating support for the park each year. Since her appointment in 2014, she has been responsible for raising over $90 million for capital improvements in the park.
