Design without execution is merely a beautiful idea. For a landscape to be successful, it must be informed by both an artisanal and pragmatic approach with a focus on craft. In this session we will explore three approaches to construction administration for private residential, commercial, and public projects.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand construction administration approaches and techniques found in private residential, commercial, and public projects.
  • Learn how a landscape architect should consider construction administration as a pre-construction consultant at the beginning of the design process.
  • Understand construction administration as a tool for mentorship (both internal to the studio and externally, to contractors).
  • Learn the importance of building relationships on-site with the artisans, contractors, and laborers that make our dreams realities.

Shawn Weidner, ASLA, PLA

Principal

Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects

Shawn loves the details – the more, the better – celebrating when projects involve intricate masonry, wood, and metal-work. He enjoys working with a range of artisans, architects, and designers, and relishes the ability to touch every part of the process, participating in design decisions, while also providing input on pricing, materials, and planting selections. In tune with both the design intent as well as the tangible construction implications, Shawn works with contractors to accurately implement the client’s vision, generating improvements along the way.

Demetrios Staurinos, ASLA

Associate

OLIN

Demetrios has over 20 years of professional experience in landscape architecture and urban design. He is fascinated by the intersecting phenomena of people and natural systems, and strives to improve the built environment through thoughtful design and the human experience. His recent waterfront work has been at the forefront of resilient design and environmental justice combining infrastructural improvements with the enhancement of the public realm. He has recently completed the signature playground addition to the design of Pier 26 in New York, the extension of Mill River Park in Stamford, Connecticut, and the master plan for Dorchester Bay in Boston.

John Payne, ASLA, PLA, ISA, Assoc. DBIA

Partner

SiteWorks

John Payne, PLA, ASLA, ISA has worked on complex park and public space projects with challenging logistical and phasing constraints, both nationally and internationally. John’s previous career as an Army leader has instilled in him a firm belief in the power of teamwork to realize a project to its full potential. His experience as a construction project manager and certified arborist helps him bring a landscape builder’s and maintainer’s lens to a project to better assess and predict maintenance, operational, cost, and phasing issues that could affect the final project's success.
