(On-Demand) The Role of AI in Landscape Architecture Education
This presentation explores the impact of AI on landscape architecture education, highlighting its potential to transform workflows, evaluation methods, learning approaches, and technology integration. While AI holds great promise, there are concerns about over reliance, the potential erosion of students' critical thinking skills, and the roles between humans and AI as creators. Educators face the challenge of fostering a balance between AI-driven tools and cultivating students' capacity for independent design thinking, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future roles as practitioners.

Benjamin George, Ph.D., ASLA, is an Associate Professor in the Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning Department at Utah State University. His research work focuses on integrating artificial intelligence and visualization technologies into the design process. He has presented widely on the design technologies and received numerous awards, including his work with historic visualizations which won the 2017 ASLA Award of Excellence for Communications. He currently serves as chair of ASLA's AI working group.

Ken McCown, ASLA, Associate AIA, ILFI, ACD, ASAI, is a Professorin the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas, where heserves as Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture, adjunct professorin architecture, and as the director for the university sustainabilitycurriculums. His background includes an undergraduate degree in landscapearchitecture and a graduate degree in architecture from the University ofIllinois at Urbana-Champaign. These degrees provided a platform forintegrative, interdisciplinary inquiry into the built environment through urbandesign, transition design/resilience, and ergonomic/behavior design.

His scholarlybackground is diverse, spanning computer science, natural resources management,psychology and planning. His research interests include visualization, spatialdata science, applied machine learning, andenvironmental perception of built and natural environments. He has publishednumerous articles on AI applications in planning and design and regularlypresents at conferences across the US and internationally. In 2023 hereceived the Excellence in Research or Creative Work Award from the Council ofEducators in Landscape Architecture.
