Landscape architecture offers a wide range of potential career paths; thus the career path of a landscape architect is almost never linear. Many landscape architects pursue careers outside of the traditional path, seeking adjacent careers that help expand upon the profession. Meet three landscape architects who are using their design training and passion for landscape architecture in non-traditional ways. This session explores their paths, shedding light on the profession, its breadth of opportunities, its strengths and weaknesses, and the importance of collaboration with allied professionals.

- Gain new perspectives on the breadth of the profession and the ways in which design training can prepare one to pursue many different career trajectories.

Dean Hill, ASLA
Sustainability Consultant
Dean Hill has over 18 years of experience in the sustainability, landscape construction, home improvement profession and more than 15 years of landscape design experience.
He is a full member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and has served on various National ASLA committees. He is a past president of the Indiana Chapter (INASLA). Dean is also one of the first landscape designers to be a Certified Green Professional as designated by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Dean has been a featured contributor to articles in Martha Stewart Living, Innovative Home, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Home Remodeling, Home Improvement, HomeStyle, and Men's Health Living magazines. Dean has also contributed to articles on ConsumerReports.org and HGTV.com.
Dean currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Orlando Foundation for Architecture as Secretary and is Chair of the Outreach Committee for OFA. He is also an active participant on the FLASLA Orlando Section Programming Committee.

Whitney began her career in television, working as a communication and marketing professional for almost 10 years. Wanting to blend her love of communication with her passion for urban spaces, art, and science, she pursued a career in landscape architecture, earning an MLA, becoming licensed, and practicing for around 5 years. Her career took another turn when she took on the role of Marketing and Business Development Manager for Dix.Hite. Her background in communication and marketing, and training as a landscape architect, give her a unique perspective on design and storytelling within the profession.

Steven Spears, FASLA, AICP, PLA, is a Principal with GroundWork Development and Momark Development, based in Austin, Texas. In addition, Spears is a consulting landscape architect and urban planner with Lionheart. Throughout his leadership, development, design and research efforts, Spears methodically integrates the local values of economy, sustainability, culture, and human sensory. Spears’ private and public-sector planning, design and development work has been recognized at the state and national level. Spears is a member of ULI, APA and ASLA. in 2015, he was inducted into the ASLA Council of Fellows.
